Batten School & VIMS: Admission

All well-prepared individuals, including those traditionally underrepresented in the marine sciences, are encouraged to apply. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, disability, or age in our programs or activities. The full non-discrimination notice is available online on William & Mary’s Equity Program.

The Batten School of Coastal & Marine Sciences & VIMS is committed to building a talented, diverse, and inclusive community of marine science leaders who have the academic and professional skills necessary to meet the present and future needs of science and society. Our holistic admission review process ensures that each applicant’s preparedness for graduate level study in marine science and potential for future career success are considered based on academic preparation, research, professional and other experience, motivation for graduate study, and career goals. Successful applicants come from a variety of academic, professional and cultural backgrounds.

Details on all program specific admissions requirements can be found on the respective degree program pages. Use the Degree Programs  tab at the top of the page to navigate and explore details for the graduate programs offered at the Batten School & VIMS. Information is also available on graduate financial aid .

Admission to Non-Degree Status

The Batten School & VIMS accepts non-degree-seeking applications from individuals who have earned a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. Permission to enroll in a graduate marine science course as a non-degree-seeking student must be requested every semester and does not automatically imply admission to any graduate program at William & Mary. With permission of the Batten School & VIMS Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, graduate credit earned in a Batten School & VIMS course as a non-degree-seeking student may be applied toward a marine science degree if the student is admitted to a graduate degree program. Non-degree-seeking students who intend to pursue a Batten School & VIMS graduate degree program should contact the Office for Academic Affairs as early as possible, or no later than the end of their second semester of coursework, to review timelines for degree-seeking admission or matriculation.
