GSWS 349 - The Queer South

Credits: (3)
Southern queer people are always-already inappropriately or insufficiently queer in the American imagination. Those who stay in closets and smaller towns (imagined as a kind of closet) or hold too tightly to Southernness after moving to America’s queer capitals face pity, derision, or fetishization. This class aims to explore and challenge the ways that queer Southerners have been used whilst also giving voice to those same queers. Employing queer theory, new cultural geography, literary/film criticism, and historical analysis, this class focuses in particular on the intersecting identities of queer and Southern. Additional intersections of race, class, and gender are necessarily part of the class’ investigations.
