Few would argue that “history plays” are a true and accurate representation of past events. Yet, a great deal of knowledge and culture is transmitted from the stage. This is especially true for marginalized groups whose culture has long been excluded from curricula. From the musical Hamilton to the wrenching AIDS play Warren this course journeys across the United States to open a window onto America’s past and how the understanding of that past has changed over time. The theatre explored in this course will provide a survey of the major, and not-so-major but hugely important, works that will help students think differently about history and how to communicate beyond the traditional essay.
