KINE 326 - Measurement and Accountability: Who is responsible for the public’s health?

This applied course will be designed around the idea that accountability refers to the principle that individuals, organizations, and the community are responsible for their actions and may be required to explain them to others” (Benjamin et al., 2006). The course will follow a design thinking approach. This is a non-linear, iterative process that teams can use to understand users, challenge assumptions, redefine problems, and create innovative solutions. It involves five phases and is helpful to tackle ill-defined or unknown problems. During the pre-session meetings, students will work on the first three phases of this approach (empathize, define, ideate). During these phases, students will develop a new lens for evaluating the question: Who is responsible for the public’s health? While in DC, we will use the ten days to complete the final 2 phases to prototype and test our newly developed lens for viewing public health responsibility.
Note: This is a DC course offered through the Washington Center. There will be 3 classes on campus and then the remaining sessions are held in DC.
