This seminar analyzes how different communities across the early modern Hispanic Atlantic (c. 1492-1700) conceptualized bodies, gender, and sexual desire.  This seminar reconstructs the Galenic medical discourse prevalent in the early modern West, as well as paradigms from indigenous communities across the so-called “New World,” in order to analyze varied verbal and visual artifacts that problematize physiologies, gender roles, and desire.
