AMES 345 - Psychoanalysis in the Global South

This course will engage the ways in which psychoanalysis is critically engaged and practiced in the Global South. While the class is largely rooted in psychoanalytic theory and practice as generated in the Southwest Asia (Arab world, Turkey, Iran), South Asia, and East Asia, we will also engage the ways in which psychoanalysis is “handled” in Argentina and South Africa. The class will understand how psychoanalytic practice and theory yields something else when it is mobilized within post-colonial contexts of the Global South and questions the very universals that European psychoanalysis purports.
