AMES 337 - Modern Iran since 1800 Credits: (3) College Curriculum: COLL 300 This course introduces students to the modern history of Iran from the inception of the Qajar dynasty (1796) to the ‘Women, Life, Freedom’ protests of 2022-23, applying two analytical approaches. First, key events such as wars, revolutions and coups are explored in the context of long-term political, economic, social, and cultural changes. Second, Iran’s modern history is examined in the context of transnational and global history, highlighting connections, similarities, and differences with other regions. The topics of this course include state and class formation, the interplay between politics and religion, the emergence and transformation of political Islam, and the role of oil, ecology, gender, labor, revolutions, and social movements. In addition to secondary literature, the course introduces students to a variety of primary sources such as governmental documents, autobiographies, newspapers articles, poems, posters, music, movies and documentaries.
