LAW 619 - Supreme Court Seminar

This course will look at Court decision-making over the past two terms and the upcoming 2024-25 docket; it will also consider the ramifications of the 2024 presidential race, especially against the backdrop of the partisan split between liberal/Democrat and  conservative/Republican Justices. This course will also provide students with an opportunity to meet with federal appeals court judges, Supreme Court advocates, and a special assistant to the Senate Judiciary Committee. Guest speakers will include federal appeals judge  and former Supreme Court advocate Pam Harris;  Stanford law professor and Supreme Court advocate Pam Karlan ;  special assistant to the Senate  Judiciary committee and UNC law professor Mike Gerhardt. We will also also hear from one or two former Supreme Court clerks, and from at least one other Supreme Court advocate.  There  will be 7 or 8 class meetings over the course of the semester. There is no exam; students will write two 4 page memos. Memos will be based on class readings and there is no  independent research.
