LAW 494 - Advanced Topics in Employment Law

This course will explore emerging topics in Employment Law including post-pandemic Unemployment Insurance programs, Family and Medical Leave insurance programs springing up in states throughout the country, and the enforcement and development of employee classification laws and issues (including state’s attempts to classify the gig worker). This online course is an advanced, conversational study designed to provide students with a practical understanding of the nuances of these laws. It combines an intense, non-political legal discussion of these topics with statutory and regulatory analysis, an understanding of the roles, functions, and relationship between the three branches of government at the Federal and State levels, and the opportunity to hear directly about three critical areas in employment law from thought leaders in these areas in both the public and private sectors. Student performance will be assessed using class participation and a final paper. This class will not significantly overlap with Law 456. It is an advanced, conversational study of topics and trends designed to further develop a student’s understanding, familiarity with, and ability to navigate these developments in Employment Law. LAW 456 or LAW 452 are pre-requisites.
