LAW 748 - Election Administration Law

Students in this course will learn the intricacies of election administration that balance access and security and achieve the state’s interest in election integrity; the legal challenges associated with administering elections; and specific processes and laws that mitigate challenges and uphold integrity in election administration. This course will focus on election law from the perspective of advising election officials on their work-an “in house counsel” approach for departments of elections. This will benefit students either considering careers in election administration or election law where they will interact with and support election officials specifically and democratic functioning more generally. Students will survey laws governing Photo ID requirements, list maintenance (registration and voter roll maintenance), state bans on private funding for elections, precincting/polling place location law. Students will also consider the challenges associated with advising election officials in an age of mis- and dis-information.
