LAW 492 - Transacting and Litigating for the Regulated Client

The Virginia State Corporation Commission (SCC) has broad regulatory oversight and authority in the areas of energy, business entities, banks and financial institutions, rail and utility pipeline safety, insurance, and more. Practicing before the Commission, whether in public service or private roles, in many ways blends the transactional and litigation as well as state and federal practices that so often remain clearly delineated in other practice areas. This one-credit course will examine a wide range of practical topics that an attorney practicing before the SCC may face. Each week, through guest speakers that have practiced publicly or privately before the SCC, this course will address specific and current topics affecting the Commission’s regulatory role. Topics addressed include data centers and crypto currencies, as well as general Virginia administrative topics such as public contracting and access to public records. Evaluation will be P/F and based on class participation and an end-of-course writing assignment.
