LAW 114B - Adv Practice: Civil The Pretrial Civil course is designed to introduce students to persuasive pretrial advocacy in a civil context. The course will prepare students for practice in civil litigation by introducing them to writing and practical skills necessary to represent a client in a civil case. Students will follow a single civil case from pre-litigation negotiations through the complaint and answer, discovery, and pre-trial motions. Students will learn civil litigation skills through a variety of practical assignments, such as drafting pleadings, conducting discovery, and engaging in alternative dispute resolution. Students will also write a demand letter and one or more substantive motions and briefs in support of motion(s). In addition to attending practice classes with adjunct professors, the students will register for and attend an additonal required writing class for the first six weeks of the semester. At the end of the semester, students will present oral arguments on a substantive motion.
