Geographic Information Science Certificate

The purpose of this post-baccalaureate certificate is to train students in the use of geographic information systems (GIS). Students will learn about remote sensing and applied theories of geographic information science. Students will learn to use geographic information systems, remote sensing, global positioning system (GPS) and other geospatial applications to analyze spatial data and spatial problems. Graduates will be prepared and able to apply geospatial technologies to real world problems across disciplines. Graduates will also be prepared to integrate geospatial technologies into their work across disciplines.
Curriculum Requirements
Total Number of Credit Hours: 15 credit hours
Core Courses - 12 credit hours
- GIS 501 Fundamentals of Geographic Information Science (GISc) (3 cr)
- GIS 505 Geovisualization and Cartographic Design (3 cr)
- GIS 410 Introduction to Remote Sensed Imagery and Analysis (3 cr)
- GIS 520 Advanced GIS Analysis and Programming (3 cr)
Restricted Electives - Minimum 3 credit hours
- GIS 550: Independent Research in Geospatial Technologies (variable 1-3 credits)
- GIS 590 Topics: Geospatial Technologies (3 cr)
Other courses offered on William & Mary’s main campus and at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science/School of Marine Science in Gloucester may be taken. These courses must be pre-approved by the GIS Certificate Program Coordinator and the course instructor. (1-4 cr)
