Classical Studies, Greek Concentration (BA in Classical Studies)
Program
The Department of Classical Studies offers four concentrations: Greek, Latin, Ancient Mediterranean Archaeology, and Ancient Mediterranean History and Cultures. Each track contributes to the liberal arts education of undergraduates while preparing students for a variety of future careers and educational paths.
Classical Studies majors are required to select from a series of core introductory courses, and also take topics courses, advanced seminars, and a senior research colloquium. In all of the concentrations, we examine the histories, material culture, languages, literature, art, and philosophies of the ancient Mediterranean. These various intersecting fields allow us to think critically about and reflect on our contemporary world in surprising ways. Studying the ancient Mediterranean fosters historical perspective, critical thinking, collaboration, and communication skills. The language courses we offer reveal the deeper meanings of Greek and Latin texts and provide an incredible basis for learning modern languages. Courses in history and archaeology provide insight into the lives of the people of the past, the diversity of the ancient Mediterranean, and an understanding of cultural resource management.
Classical Studies alumni have gone on to graduate programs including law school and medical school. We routinely place our students in the top graduate programs for ancient languages, history, and archaeology. Our students have also pursued careers in many non-academic professions, including pharmacy, banking, architecture, business, museum work and library science.

A course listed in two categories may satisfy the requirement in either of the categories, but not in both. Also, a course used to satisfy the core requirements or the capstone requirement may not also be counted as satisfying an area requirement.

CLCV 401 Classical Studies Practicum in conjunction with a course of 3 or more credits specifically approved for this purpose, taken either prior to or concurrently with CLCV 401 Classical Studies Practicum. Typically, the list of approved courses will consist of most 300- and 400-level courses offered in CLCV, GREK, HEBR, or LATN, including honors in Classical Studies (CLCV 496 Honors, GREK 496 Honors, or LATN 496 Honors), as well as other courses of 3 credits or more specifically approved for this purpose by the chair of Classical Studies. Also eligible, with the approval of the chair, are interdisciplinary honors courses and interdisciplinary COLL 400 courses with significant Classical Studies content. Courses applied to the capstone requirement in this manner may not be counted toward fulfilling other requirements for the major.
Major Computing Requirement
Fulfilled during the completion of projects for the Classical Studies Capstone.
Major Writing Requirement
Fulfilled during the completion of projects for the Classical Studies Capstone.
COLL 400
Any of the options listed above under the Classical Studies Capstone section will fulfill the COLL 400 requirement.
