This course is an introduction to the major works of Chinese literature in English Translation. This includes early philosophy (including the Confucian Classics and early Daoist texts), poetry, drama, short stories and novels, with emphasis on the cultural and historical context in which these works were written. This class is arranged chronologically, but within each period our discussions will be thematic. We will cover Chinese literature from all points of the imperial period, from the early bronze age through the 19th century.
