“Beyond Kung Fu: Asians in Film” is a film history and appreciation seminar exposing students to films by or about Asians, Asian Americans, and those in other Asian diasporas. Points of inquiry include how factors such as orientalism, immigration, colonization, capitalism, marginalization, objectification, exotification, a/sexualization and homophobia impact the enactment of agency, resilience, empowerment, and liberation through these genres, and their relationship (or lack thereof) with mainstream structures of power and hegemony such as Hollywood. Thus students will also investigate how Hollywood and non-Asian filmmakers portray Asians and their communities and the real life complications of these choices.
