Topic for Fall

1492: Imagining Transatlantic

This course focuses on the formation of the Spanish transatlantic empire in the early modern period (c. 1492-c. 1700). Throughout the semester, we will focus on a variety of cultural artifacts and practices (novels, theatrical representations, letters, chronicles, autobiographies, etc., in order to investigate the ways in which the Spanish empire “invented” itself, and how different communities and individuals within its limits adhered to or resisted its mandates. In other words, this course will analyze how the Spanish empire legitimizes itself, how it represents its subordinates (women, indigenous peoples of the Americas, etc.), and to what extent these subordinates are able to dissent and resist it. Course taught in Spanish.
